Golf Style Guides:
Dress Codes, Outfits & Wardrobe Guides

Know exactly what to wear at every course — from relaxed public layouts to strict private clubs and professional tournaments.

Golf Has Dress Codes. We Help You Navigate Them.

Golf's dress code landscape is more varied than it's ever been. Public courses have relaxed considerably — many now permit athletic shorts, performance tee shirts, and casual footwear. Private clubs have tightened in some areas while opening up in others. Resort courses split the difference. And tournament play, at any level, operates by its own strict set of standards.

The cost of getting it wrong ranges from mild embarrassment at a casual layout to being turned away at the pro shop of a prestigious club. Our style guides are written to prevent both outcomes — and to help you build a golf wardrobe that works across every context you're likely to encounter.

We approach golf style from a practical standpoint. The question isn't just "what looks good?" but "what looks good, functions well on the course, passes dress code scrutiny, and survives regular washing?" Every recommendation in our style guides is grounded in real-world experience — at public courses, semi-private clubs, private members clubs, and regional tournament settings.

The Universal Golf Style Rules

01

Collar Is King at Private Clubs

The vast majority of private and semi-private clubs require a collared shirt for men. Mock-neck is accepted at most. Crew-neck tees are almost universally prohibited. When in doubt, default to a polo.

02

Check the Club Website First

Dress codes vary more than golfers expect, even within the same tier of club. The safest move before any unfamiliar round is a quick check of the club's website or a phone call to the pro shop. Takes 90 seconds, saves an embarrassing conversation.

03

Shorts Length Still Matters

Even courses with relaxed dress codes typically expect shorts that hit at or above the knee. Cargo shorts, cutoffs, and gym shorts remain off-limits at most properties regardless of category. Performance shorts in a tailored cut are the safe choice.

04

Athleisure Has Limits

Golf-specific athleisure from brands like Vuori, Nike, and Lululemon is increasingly accepted on public courses. But the same pieces that work at your local muni will get you turned away at a private club. Know your venue.
